Spend-O-Meter Methodology
The Mississippi Spend-O-Meter is based on the total amount of $17,404,185,850 appropriated by the state legislature for the current fiscal year (2008), which ends June 30, 2008. This includes the amounts appropriated during the 2007 Regular Session only.
These funds were appropriated from the state General Fund, state Special Funds, and federal funds that go to or through state agencies. The amount above does not include (a) most federal funding associated with Hurricane Katrina relief; (b) any local spending, including education spending derived from local tax sources; or (c) federal funds that do not go through state agencies (Social Security, Medicare, agriculture subsidies, military facilities and personnel, etc.).
The Spend-O-Meter calculates the amount spent since 12:00 midnight on July 1, 2007. It calculates the amount based on the viewer's clock time. Viewers with incorrect time settings may see inaccurate numbers.
